MIGUEL: AN INSPIRATION

OPINION:

Miguel was born without front legs.  He came from the Dominican Republic to The Mia Foundation in New York.  The Mia Foundation is the only organization in the U.S. that solely rescues animals that are born with birth defects.  Miguel does not let his disability hinder him from living life to the fullest.  He is a happy, fun-loving little boy.

Miguel inspires me with his limitless strength and spirit.  A little living being with an abundance of enthusiasm and happiness.  He shows complete disregard for his shortcomings and lives his life with boundless energy and joy.

I have wondered how he can live with a disability without knowing he has a disability.  Is living with a disability a learned behavior?  Someone forgot to tell Miguel that he was supposed to have two front legs.  He must wonder how his playmates function with those appendages hanging from their shoulders.

I have become a paraplegic, losing the use of my legs very late in life, and Miguel is an inspiration—an inspiration helping me cope.  Coping, not with my disability, but with my modified mobility.

Thank you, Miguel.

  1. Thank you for your service, Sir. I understand completely as I’ve come to deeply admire Miguel and had a dream come to life this past weekend where I got to hold him. I’ve been through serious life changing illnesses and this Lil super hero touched my heart. Don’t give up, act as if it’s all fine and somehow it will be. That’s what he’s taught me. Love this sweet incredible boy.

  2. I found the Mia Foundation through Facebook and follow them and donate when I can. And I too fell in love with Miguel. Anytime I’m having a bad day or I need some encouragement to get through something I think about that little guy named Miguel and remind myself how happy he is even though he was born with no front legs. Miguel is an inspiration to all of us I think. And like someone else also said you wrote something that a lot of people think. Thank you.
And thank you sir for your service to our country.
I too will be sharing your story!!!!!

  3. I have been following The Mia Foundation ever since Mick, the Boston Terrier born with swimmer’s syndrome. So love all the work they do. However Emma’s Cleft Palate is another organization that only takes in dogs/puppies born with special needs.

  4. I have watched Miquel from a puppy and have been awed by him. That little fellow has a zest for life ,no matter what handicap he has ! He is inspiring to anyone with a handcap .

  5. Aww! I love Miguel too! So glad he’s been an inspiration for you! I do know of one other rescue that helps dogs with neurological and mobility issues. It’s called Heaths Haven. Check them out on Facebook!!?

  6. I’ve been following the Mia Foundation on FB for a while now. It’s amazing how far Miguel has come from when he first arrived. The foundation performs miracles. And Miguel is a rock star! So glad that you see it too.
